I would like to use my iMac to convert some old home videos (VHS) onto DVD. I would like the option of using iMovie (or some other software anyone can suggest) to edit the footage once on the iMac before burning to DVD. I have done a wee bit of research, although a lot of the results google brings up are some years old now. I just wondered if any of you had even done this, or could offer any advice? In case it makes a difference, I have a Late 2009 27 inch iMac. I believe we have an old VHS player kicking around somewhere, although quite what options it has in terms of 'out' ports I cannot say.

The best way I have found to convert old VHS to DVD is to connect your VHS player to a recordable DVD (ideally S-VHS, if not Scart) and let that do the encoding/ conversion. Once the conversion is complete put it on a disc and then rip it on your Imac using Handbrake or other software for editing purposes. In my defence when I was researching the best best way to archive/ convert to DVD I did test the Roxio and a Pinnacle Dazzle (I think) with my Panasonic DVD recorder and from a quality perspective the dvd recorder conversions were better using the same input source. Like you say I now use an SVHS recorder connected to a T.B.C. (Time Base Corrector)/ Video Enhancer which can help significantly in preserving the quality.
