I have an Asus P5GD1 motherboard, with a SATA drive plugged into it, running Windows XP SP3. This computer should be able to run SATA drives using AHCI, according to Asus and Intel documents, but I can't get it to work. My firmware, and Windows OS are all up-to-date. I downloaded Intel Application Accelerator, which is supposed to enable AHCI, from the ASUS support downloads for my specific motherboard. When I run it, it says my hardware isn't supported. If I'm downloading software for my specific model, then should work. Nonetheless, I checked out the IAA documentation.

How the heck am I supported to get this to work? I really want to be able to use NCQ. I decided to go for broke and reinstall. I slipstreamed the text-mode Intel ICH6 (R and M) drivers onto a new Windows install CD. Then I changed the SATA mode to AHCI in my BIOS and ran Windows setup.
Setup recognised my hard drive and allowed me to install Windows, and it's now running in AHCI mode, so I guess that part is success. In device manager, the I/O controller my drive is on, is correctly identified. But what the heck is 82801FB/FBM doing in there??

For the third time, Scout, my BIOS is completely up-to-date.
That means everything running smoothly now. Probably, the 82801FR is turned OFF when you disable AHCI in BIOS, therefore Windows is unable to detect it. In this case, the 82801FB takes over in IDE mode.
This creates the problem of how do you install the driver for hardware which is turned off, and you can't boot Windows up when it's turned on. The utilities that Asus distributes won't take either. Anyway, thanks all for listening.
